Falls are one of the most common and most preventable risks for older adults. A single fall can lead to serious injury and a lasting loss of confidence. The good news is that many falls can be avoided with a few thoughtful changes around the home. Here's a room-by-room guide to making a living space safer.

Entryways and hallways. Keep walkways clear of clutter, cords, and loose rugs, which are frequent tripping hazards. Make sure these areas are well lit, and consider adding nightlights for evening trips. If there are steps, sturdy handrails on both sides offer valuable support.

The bathroom. This is one of the highest-risk rooms in any home because of wet, slippery surfaces. Grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower or tub give a secure place to hold on. A non-slip mat, a raised toilet seat, and a shower chair can all reduce risk significantly. Setting the water heater to a safe temperature also prevents accidental burns.

The bedroom. A clear path from the bed to the door especially to the bathroom is essential for nighttime safety. Keep a lamp or light switch within easy reach, and make sure the bed is at a comfortable height for getting in and out. Loose bedding and slippery floors near the bed deserve attention, too.

The kitchen. Store everyday items within easy reach so there's no need for step stools or stretching. Wipe up spills promptly, and make sure floor surfaces aren't overly slick. Good lighting over counters and the stove helps prevent accidents.

Stairs and living areas. Secure or remove loose rugs, keep stairways well lit, and ensure railings are firmly anchored. Arrange furniture so there's plenty of room to move without weaving around obstacles.

Beyond the home itself, the right footwear, regular vision checks, and gentle movement to build strength and balance all play a role in preventing falls.
